GroupOur Story: During late 2010 Dana & Joanne were planning an event for the “San Diego Spa Association” which was to happen early 2011, at the same time Jim & Scott were also planning an event but for a different association known as the “Southern California Spa Association”, it happened to be in the same week early 2011! Knowing each other as friends and business colleagues in the spa & wellness industry for many years they contacted each other and explained the predicament. Rather than go ahead and have 2 separate events both in the So.Cal area the 4 of them decided to meet instead to discuss how they could go forward with a collaborative event for So. Cal as a whole and that is how Spa Connection was born. One Wednesday night the 4 met at Spa Gregories sitting around a large grandiose table in Del Mar and brainstormed on what they could do to all work together and “connect” Spa Directors and Vendors in So Cal as a whole.

Their first event was held March 2011 at the Grand Hyatt in Carlsbad with over 100 spa directors in attendance, Dr. Murad as the keynote speaker and 40 vendors. Since then they have held events in the areas of Ojai, Orange County, San Diego and even sailing on a presidential yacht. Spa Connection is now entering it’s 3rd successful year in 2013 and the 4 partners still meet around that big grandiose table in Spa Gregories to discuss their next plan of attack!

 

 


 

Scott Bio

Scott Duncan

Partner

Scott is the General Manager and Partner of Spa Gregories, LLC which was founded in 1998 and having practice in Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita and Del Mar California.
From 1987-1995 McDonnell Douglas (an aerospace company located in Long Beach, California) recruited Scott for their Business Management program. Scott served as a Fight Ramp Manager, leading a crew of Electrical and Mechanical Inspectors to pre and post flight new commercial aircraft. Scott completed his career at McDonnell Douglas on the C-17 military program.

Scott Duncan is active in many philanthropic and community organizations. Scott has served as a wish grantor for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and volunteered many hours toward other non-profit organizations. Scott is most proud of founding “Greet the Day” in 2003, a non-profit that facilitates alternative healing services free of charge for cancer survivors.

Scott Co-founder of the Southern California Spa Director’s Association developed in 2000. In 2011 the SCSDA had merged with The San Diego Spa Association to form “The Spa Connection”. The Spa Connection is committed to serve the Spa community through networking, education and Connecting the best of the Spa Professionals.

Yoga lover, spa aficionado, wonder junkie, eternal optimist, voracious reader, animal lover, healthy chef, water sports enthusiast, dream LANDER…who ALSO enjoys… …injecting massive amounts of fun and optimism into each day, being spontaneous and adventurous, traveling, cooking, music, paddle boarding, boogie boarding, sailing, art and museums, theater, volunteering and mentoring, jumping in puddles and eating organic gummy bears and licorice in bed!

As Principal of San Diego’s award winning boutique Day Spa, Spa Velia, Dana is a successful entrepreneur who is incredibly passionate about helping people experience their extraordinary life through holistic living and a wellness lifestyle. Dana received her certification as a Holistic Health & Wellness Coach with the world’s leading experts in nutrition and wellness at the world-renowned Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and is a Board Certified Health Counselor with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). Dana is a Feng Shui consultant and received her training at The International Feng Shui School with world renowned Expert Amanda Collins. Sharing this devotion to ongoing education, combined with and over 20 years in the spa and wellness industry, Dana co-founded The Spa Connection, and served as Education and Speaker Chairperson for The International Spa Association (ISPA) contributing best industry practices and tools for the spa industry. Because of her, successful and positive visibility within the spa industry she is a frequent contributor to trade publications, industry resources, articles and advisory boards.


 

Jim Bio

Jim has always been intrigued about the scientific evidence that our health problems are related to a combination of nutritional efficiency and environmental toxicity. From a very young age, Jim had a growing appreciation of the body’s physiological capabilities to support health and wellness. He was also very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel extensively as his father worked for the airlines and experienced hospitality as a guest. He was fascinated with Hotels and was always intrigued by the way a hotel could make you feel, while traveling – that “home away from home” feeling.

As Spa and Recreation Director of California’s only Forbes Triple Five-Star Resort, The Grand Del Mar, Jim brings more than 17 years of spa industry experience. He has a wealth of expertise in programming and training for some of the region’s finest spa properties, he has worked for The Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, The Island Hotel, The Balboa Bay Club and Resort as well as the Spa at South Coast Plaza. In working for the following companies, he has also assisted with pre-opening activities as a spa consultant for more than 20 individual spa openings from Florence, Italy – Cairo, Egypt and throughout the United States.

As known as a true pioneer in the luxury Spa and Wellness segment, Jim is a resident of Carlsbad, California. He also is one of The Spa Connection Founders, and is an advisory member and past instructor for the University of California (UCI) Spa and Hospitality Management Program.
One of his favorite quotes is by Robert Frost that single handedly sums up the journey from suboptimal health to well being: “The only way round is through.”

 


Jo bio

Joanne Berry

Partner

Joanne is an avid traveler and has an adventurous spirit that has took her from her hometown of near Manchester in the UK to Asia, Middle East, New Zealand, Australia and now America. She brings over twenty years of international experience to the luxury and medical spa industry. Ms. Berry holds a BTEC National Diploma in Beauty Therapy and an IFA Diploma in Aromatherapy. Her management roles have focused on business operations and education in different segments of the spa industry including, cruise ships, day spas, resort and medical spas. Joanne has conducted extensive training and product seminars, including training over 400 staff in all aspects of spa treatments and customer service as the Education Manager with the Steiner Day Spa Division. She also gained broad operations management experience overseeing spa services on 125 cruise ships with Steiner Management Services.

In 2006, Joanne launched Spa Remedies, which offers customized consulting to clients looking to build or refresh their current spa operation. Client services focus on customer care, retail, spa operations, and staff training. She brings her clients a wealth of customized knowledge to implement into their own spa ensuring client success and customer satisfaction.

Together with being the Founder of Spa Remedies, Joanne is the Director of Spa & Wellness Education for the Bellus Academies, based in San Diego, CA. She keeps Bellus’ esthetic and massage curriculums on the cutting edge of industry trends. She is also responsible for creating and overseeing the ongoing development of an advanced course curriculum and for using her connections and industry acumen to place students in the spa and salon industry upon graduation.
